I ♥ Faces Contest Entry | Excited!

This week's theme for I ♥ Faces is: "Excited!"

I come across a lot of excitement photographing weddings...so it was hard to pick just one picture for the entry. But, I kept coming back to this one photo from Jenna and Dave's wedding in July. Despite the very rainy weather that day, Jenna was SO excited to be marrying Dave.

It's my Birthday!

Although it happens every year, I kind of feel like my birthday really creeped up on me this time. Perhaps it has something to do with it falling on a Monday. Shouldn't birthdays on Mondays be banned?

It was quite fun to receive a bunch of cards in the mail this afternoon. I love getting cards--it's so "old-fashioned" but such a treat. I know whoever sent me the card had to take some time to buy it, write in it, and lop some postage on it and stick it in the mail to me. And I'm always amazed by how they get it to me on time.

Indeed, I have much to be thankful for as I reflect on the 25 years God has given me. I hope to have many more birthdays to share with family and friends...and I'm glad the next few won't be on a Monday :).

Sweet! I won 2nd Place!

On Monday I entered into one of I ♥ Faces contest entries. As it was my first time to enter their contests, I was extremely excited to see my photo won 2nd place out of over 560 entries! Cool!

And the photo again (thanks Amanda and Tim!):

Behind the Shot

Although I forgot last Thursday to take photos of the group during the workshop, an attendee (Rob) managed to grab a couple of photos of me while I was working. I thought I'd share them (I hope that's OK Rob!) to help folks see what I was doing behind the shot.

You see? One of my many skills as a photographer--walking backwards and shooting. I just know one of these days I'm going to totally biff it.

What I was doing...

And the shot...

Seems pretty safe.

Now see? I'm not afraid to get a bit dirty, too.

The shot.

Hopefully that will inspire you to go for some different angles when you're taking photos.

A Jelly Donut and a Swan

You're probably scratching your head over the title of this post. I'll explain. You see, this is how Astin has been spending most of his day:

Jay and I call that his "jelly donut" pose. Don't ask me how he breathes or how it can possibly smell good...but he loves curling up like that.

Another favorite of his is the "swan" position.

I guess his rump makes as good of a pillow as any...

"I am so not amused."

As you can see, he's had a rough day.

Pathetic, really.

I ♥ Faces Contest Entry | Blue

I ♥ Faces" is a cool blog devoted to showcasing faces...and they hold weekly contests and challenges. Although I've lurked around the blog for a while, this is my first time to enter one of the contests.

This week's heme is "blue," I thought this photo fit the theme well...

...I feel like this today. Happy, excited, and thankful for another wonderful week (not to mention the lovely fall weather we're getting here in Pittsburgh).

Remembering to be Thankful

As we remember the events that happened eight years ago, I'm sure we are all thankful for the many men and women who sacrifice so much for our safety and freedoms. I know I am.

But I'm also reminded to be thankful for the things closer to home--like my husband, Jay. What many of you may not know is that Jay comes with me to every wedding that I photograph. He's my faithful assistant and second shooter. Yep. He second shoots. And he gets some pretty good shots, too, I might add. It's such a blessing to get to work with the person I love the most--not to mention what a relief to not have to manage everything by myself!

So thank you, Jay, for all of your love and hard work!

He's smiling here because he knows I'm taking his picture (man, is he good looking!).

Love and Poetry

In keeping with tradition, Jay gave me a book of poetry for our anniversary. This is not because he's a Romeo romantic, but rather because I really love poetry.

I remember the first poet I fell in love with. I was in 6th grade--he had long been dead. Nevertheless, I was quite smitten with Edgar Alan Poe--and not just because of his famous "The Raven" bit. I still have my first anthology of his work that my mother bought for me in Russia--I know because the price sticker is in rubles.

Now, I'm not any good at writing poetry, but that doesn't stop me from trying my hand at a verse or two every now and then. But, most of the time I just stick to reading it...John Donne, Thomas Hardy, Emily Dickinson...and of course the Russian poets--Anna Akhmatova and Osip Mandelshtam (thanks college for exposing me to their talent).

This year Jay gave me Sylvia Plath's "Ariel." It's probably about as far from romantic stuff as you can get. In fact, it's downright depressing. Despite this fact, I'm quite amazed at her raw talent and deft use of the English language. Still, not exactly your snuggle-up with book.

Do you like poetry? Do you have any recommendations for next year?

Dog Accent for Pillow

Well, OK, not really. But it kind of looks like one at first glance. Actually, I'm not even sure what a dog accented pillow would look like--or if I'd want one.

I really wore Astin out yesterday when I took him on an hour-long run. Let's just say someone wasn't whining to go outside last night.

Yummy Strawberry Cake

I love summer time for the abundance of fresh berries, particularly strawberries. So, I thought I would share this recipe for Strawberry Cake that I just made. It's my twist on a recipe I found online, and I hope you enjoy it. F.Y.I., this is definitely not photography related, so if you're looking for that--check out my categories at the top of the page.

And, if you do try this recipe, let me know how it came out for you and if you did anything different.

Let's start with our ingredients. Exact measurements will be listed at the end of the blog.

Here are the "wet" ingredients:

And the dry ones (that's sugar in the cups):

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees, and spray and flour two round 9-inch baking pans.

Cream your butter, sugar, and gelatin until light and fluffy.

Separate the yolks from the egg whites, and set the egg whites aside.

Beat the egg yolks into the butter mixture.

Meanwhile, sift your cake flour BEFORE measuring.

Measure your flour, and combine the flour and baking powder.

Measure out your milk and cream (I used a half a cup of each because I didn't have any whole milk).

Alternate adding the flour mixture and the milk to the batter on medium speed.

It should look something like then when it's well mixed.

Wash and prepare the strawberries by chopping off the stems.

Puree them in a food processor.

Beat the egg whites until soft peaks form.

Now, fold the egg whites and the strawberry puree into the batter.

Pour the batter into the cake pans and place into the oven.

Now you can prepare the frosting and filling.

Beat the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.

In a large bowl, combine the sugar, cream cheese, salt, and vanilla.
(sorry--I forgot a photo of this!)

Check on the cakes (20-25 minutes), and if a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out clean, take them out. Let cool in the pan before placing them on a rack.

Fold the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture.

Cool cakes on a rack, leveling them if necessary.

Mix the remaining strawberry puree and cornstarch; bring to boil over medium heat, then remove from heat and cool, continuing to stir.

Once the puree has cooled, spread it between the cake layers.

Then frost the cake with the frosting, starting at the top and working your way around the cake.

I added some sliced strawberries to the top as a little detail. That way people will know what kind of cake it is, too.

And viola!
